Long, Long Trailer (1954) (VHS)
Editorial Reviews: From Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide - Pleasant vehicle for Lucy and Desi, on honeymoon with cumbersome trailer that creates havoc for the duo. Plenty of slapstick. The
New Roadside America : The Modern Traveler's Guide to the Wild and Wonderful
America's Tourist Attractions
Editorial Reviews: Amazon.com - Roadside America is a Baedeker to the junkiest attractions on America's major, minor, and nearly forgotten highways. Planning to see Graceland? Why not let this delightful volume direct you on the complete Elvis tour, including a miniature "Elvis City" in Roanoke, Virginia; the Elvis-theme McDonald's in Elvis's birthplace of Tupelo, Mississippi; and the Elvis Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Learn about the Curse of the Pyramids, and see the many unfinished pyramids that litter America's heartland. Jump into the debate about which town has the largest ball of string, the biggest tree stump, or America's true weather-forecasting groundhog. The locations of giant statues of the Jolly Green Giant, an "African village" in South Carolina claiming to be an independent kingdom, and the mysterious "Thing" of the Sonoran Desert are all found here. Buy it and drive west, young trendies. Book Review: apoem from Bosque Farms, NM - I lent this book to my father and never got it back. So I'm on here buying it again. One night when doing research on the internet, I found this wonderful site about traveling. (roadsideamerica.com) I had so much fun looking at this website and learning about what I could see while I traveled, I knew I wanted the book. I had a ball reading it and planned to go out of my way to see some of the fun things listed in this book. I passed it on to my dad when he went on a road trip and he won't give it back. So I'm buying a new copy, it's that much fun. This book puts the fun back into travel. Forget about hotels and motels and route numbers, these you can find out for yourself on a map. Forget about phone numbers and costs and hours of operation- those change. This book helps you open your eyes to see what there is to see- fun museums, crazy statues, small churches and more. Even if you don't travel, this is a fun book to read. What a gem. Paperback - 287

Spirit
of the Open Road
Book Description: Spirit of the Open Road acts as your best friend. This book provides advice for most situations RVers encounter while enjoying the fascinating RVing lifestyle. It is written as a guide and the reader friendly spiral binding make it an easy to read reference book. Peggi addresses everything from the basic choice of RV's to living in it to packing it to driving it plus much more. There are no chapters, instead a list of titles and sub titles with page numbers make it easy to find help for any situation RVers find themselves in. Dealers are now ordering the book by the case to present as a gift to their new customers. Although the book is written from a Canadian perspective, the information in it is most valuable for anyone RVing in a country other than their own. Many topics are general RV tips but my American readers rave about Spirit's easy to read informative format. Book Review: kooldak from Chama, NM United States - My wife and I are new Rvers & were looking for a good book or two to help us learn and avoid beginner mistakes. If you are in the same boat, this is the book for you! While the book is subtitled "The Essential Reference for Canadian RVers", it is almost completely irrelevant whether you live in Canada or the USA (as we do). This book is about the RV experience - period. Jam-packed with tips, it teaches you the basics and much, much more. This book, written from years of experience & suggestions from other RVers, is very complete and informative. If you're not a novice, you still just might find some great ideas that you had not occurred to you before. The book is easily read, fun, and well laid out. You'll find information on maximizing your space, towing/driving, dealing with pets, budgeting for your RV lifestyle, finding a good campground, buying or selling your RV, and much more. I bought 5 different RV related books, but "Spirit of the Open Road" was far and away the best of the bunch. Spiral-bound - 273

Movin'
on : Living & Traveling Full-Time in a Recreational Vehicle
Book Description: Movin' On answers questions about full-time RVing first with solid information then goes beyond with stories from Ron & Barb's own experience. It is an informative and insightful look into lifestyle that has become very popular especially among retirees. Book Review: Peter & Marta Magnasco from Wisconsin - For us, the dream was there, but so unreachable and scary until we ordered Movin' On. We had dreamed of becoming fulltimers when we retired at the age of 65. After reading this book we will now be retiring next June at the age of 62. There was so much we didn't know about the lifestyle and this book addressed all of our concerns. Barb and Ron wrote this book as if we were sittting in their motorhome and we were just talking about everyday things, which what fulltiming is, an everyday thing. We felt like we had known them as good friends forever even though we had never met, and we can't thank them enough. Paperback (February

Having Fun Yet? : Comic Adventures in a Recreation Vehicle
Book Description: RV Having Fun Yet? is the hilarious account of an Hollywood television comedy writer who drags his reluctant wife on an 18-month adventure in a 35-foot motor home. Ray will keep you in stitches as he enlightens you to basic survival in a recreational vehicle. You'l cry with laughter was you cover such topics as: How I Dragged My Wife Kicking and Screaming Into a Motorhome: Persuading a woman who loves her nest in suburbia to go adventuring in a home on wheels. The Write Stuff: Answering letters from baffled RVers on warming up cold husbands, overweight mates, snoring, and what to do about a scandalous young woman who shocks an RV park by leaving her shades up at bedtime A Dog's Life in an RV: Charles, the amorous French poodle, tells of meeting Fifi, the love of his life, and his other adventures on the road. Heading for the Showers: If the Lord wanted us to use coin-operated showers, how come He didn't equipped our birthday suits with change pockets? The Alaskan Air Force: Battling Alaska's awesome moose-chasing mosquitoes, which attack in swarms with needles big enough to do acupuncture Checklist for Survival: Hard-won tips on motorhoming, such as, "Never go over a speed bump without making sure there is no one in the commode." From the Back Cover: Art Linkletter says - "Years ago I became famous for spontaneous humor and it's high time that I acknowledge my thanks to Ray Parker for writing some of my best ad-libs. His sense of the absurb was unfailing because his mind interprets every thing he sees on the bias. While everyone else watches life as it actually happens, Ray looks as it through the prism of the outrageous and absurd. You'll chuckle over this book if you've never even stepped into an RV. If you're an old hand at cross-country travel, you'll howl at the chapter on RV Park showers. My own favorite is the story of how Ray dragged his wife out of a comfortable, setteld home, and kicking and screaming, into the life of a perpatetic gypsy." Paperback (October

Foghorn
Outdoors: Camper's Companion
Book Description: With authority and a good dose of humor, Foghorn Outdoors: The Camper's Companion takes you step by step through the entire camping process. With convenient checklists for gear, first aid and repair kits, groceries, and essentials for camping with kids or pets, you'll find it easy to organize your expedition. Basic outdoor skills, such as navigating in the woods and weathering storms, are covered for those of you camping for the first time, but even expert campers will find these information-packed chapters helpful. You'll delight in the dozens of camp-friendly gourmet recipes for meals such as Tandoori Trout and Mountain Challah. The Camper's Companion lets you enjoy camping, not just survive it. "Foghorn Outdoors: The Camper's Companion is a virtual encyclopedia of all you'll need to begin to move to a place where the sky is your ceiling and the woods are your walls." - San Francisco Chronicle Book Review: A reader - Why buy a library of books to learn how to get out of doors? This wise and funny book with the drab title covers all aspects of backpacking, camping, cycling, canoeing for beginners and experts. The recipes are so much better than any of the other so-called "outdoor cooking" books that you'll jettison the others with the weekly garbage and revel in such glorious challenges as this: "Baking a chocolate cake while backpacking is like sex on Wednesday afternoon: gratuitous but lots of fun." The chapter on the Internet is the first of its kind anywhere for outdoor types, and does it all in plain English. No cyberbabble here. Star-gazing, equipment, and fishing guides, resources and checklists, and, ta-da!, TEAR-OUT sections (recipes and checklists) so you can actually burn this book and have it too! These guys can write AND hike, cook AND eat, get lost AND found, and even teach you how to lie in a hammock! (It's an art: you could look it up!) The authors are experts but never make you feel like a klutz. You end up wishing they'd take you along, and that's the mark of a terrific book. Paperback - 460

Outdoors: Pacific Northwest Hiking
Book Description: From city strolls to rural trails and alpine treks, this book rates each trail for quality and difficulty, and includes detailed trip notes as well as easy-to-follow directions and useful maps. This edition offers newly updated information on fee and permit requirements. Book Review: A reader from Redmond, WA - A few people determined this book has "less detail" than other guidebooks for narrower areas. To quote my 7-year-old: Duh! Most guidebooks on our shelf cover 50 hikes, 100 at the most. This one has more than 1,000 in two states. Do the math. I think this guide is designed to be a far-reaching reference work, giving all the info you need to pick a hike, whether you're in Blaine or Klamath Falls. It's a bummer it doesn't have pics and maps for each hike, but it does have everything you need to know, and better yet, tells you where to find out more. I've used two editions of this book for five years and can say it does have some things none of my other guides have: "User" categories for every trail, telling whether it's open to dogs, mountain bikes, horses or just hikers. Accurate contact and permit info (this guide is updated every couple years, it seems; most guides maybe every 4-5 years. And the name of each map (USGS and even Green Trails) for each and every trail. It also has a lot of trails you won't find in other guides, i.e., near cities and in the 'burbs. I've found the trailhead descriptions to be quite accurate and the trail notes very helpful, often entertaining. All things considered: We have lots of other guides with color pics, fancier graphics, etc. But when we're leaving the house for a couple weeks on the road, this it the ONE that comes with. Anderson's
Campground & RV Park Travel Directory
Book Description: User-friendly annual guide to private, federal, state, regional, county and city campgrounds, RV parks and trails in NY, PA, NJ, VA, MD, DE, WV, NC, SC, GA and FL. Lists campgrounds, RV parks, trails, and RV dealers/service shops with their addresses, phone numbers, driving directions, fees, operating dates and policies (regarding pets, equipment, credit cards and reservations). Campground and RV park listings include information about park size, facilities, utilities (water, sewer, electrical, cable, modem and phone service), onsite activities and nearby attractions. Many listings also include campers' comments about the campgrounds and RV parks. All campgrounds and RV parks are shown and numbered on state maps and RV dealers are shown on individual area maps. Campground lodging rental information and over $2,000 in coupons for free camping and discounts are listed in special sections in the back. Updated annually since 1974. Book Review: mtncreekcg@aol.com from Gardners, PA - As a campground owner, I consider Anderson's directory one of the best sources of information available to the camper. This is because the information is obtained by the publishers of the directory who camp at our facilities and have experienced our campgrounds "first-hand". They are interested in the things which make your camping experience more enjoyable, i.e. clean facilities, friendly & efficient service, atmosphere, etc. They realize that you don't have an exceptional campground just because you have a flowerbed beside your bathhouse. These folks are experienced campers and know what campers are looking for. They also include comments from other campers who have visited our facilities. The directory provides the same information on directions, rates, and amenities that other directories do, but I feel it gives you a more personal feel of what the campground is like. I would highly recommend it. And if you have five campground owners/managers sign the designated area in the back of the book, you will receive a free directory the following year! Paperback - 494

Within minutes I had found three campsites that I will be enjoying this summer and will easily find thanks to clear and concise directions. Tom Stienstra has an easy writing style to read and gives all the pertinent information to his readers about the sites he discusses. Outdoors California Hiking : The Complete Guide to More Than 1,000 of the
Best Hikes (Foghorn Outdoors Sereis)
Book Description: Don't be stuck on the same trail again and again. With Foghorn Outdoors: California Hiking, you have over 1,000 trails to choose from for your next hike. With a hiker-friendly format, this hiker's bible will let you quickly find the location of a quality hike. Authorities on the California outdoors, Tom Stienstra and Ann Marie Brown profile a wide variety of hikes -- 1,000 in all -- ranging from as short as 10-minute walks to weeklong trips into remote wildlands. Along with detailed trail notes, ratings, level of difficulty, distances and times, you'll find 60 maps-including one foldout map highlighting each trailhead. You'll also get the most up-to-date information available on fees, maps, permits, and rules regarding dogs, bicycles, horseback riders, and accessibility for wheelchair users. "California Hiking is the most comprehensive book in California history." -- The Fresno Bee Book Review: A reader from SANTA CLARA, CA USA - Well, my copy is a little dog-eared by now. Every spring I pick it up, and look for my next CA adventure. I look for secluded places, with senic beauty - this book has not let me down. Favorite of mine was the Summit Trail hike in South Warner Wilderness. "Savor every moment of this trip--it is one of the greatest little-known hiking trips anywhere in America." Who would have ever thought of going there if it weren't for this book. The 45-mile, 4-day hike was rated 4 (of 5) for difficulty, and 10 (of 10) for scenic beauty, and I found it to be exactly that. Keep in mind, that the difficulty factor can be adjusted by stretching the hike over more (or less) days, or by throwing in a layover day. Usually, when I pick this book up, I'm looking for a place to backpack for several days - the book is somewhat limited in this area, as approximately 2/3 of the book seems to be about day hikes - this is, of course, a plus for day hikers! The book is comprehensive - if you live in California, it will no doubt include hikes near your home. Paperback - 720

Outdoors: New England Hiking
Book Description: This updated edition offers a variety of hikes for mountain lovers, beachcombers, families, day hikers, and backpackers of all levels. Highlights include the 268-mile Long Trail through Vermont's Green Mountains, and hikes along the Appalachian Trail. Book Review: notnamednick from Massachusetts - I love the scope as well as the detail in this guide. It covers all New England states, and it describes how to drive to the trailhead then has great description of trails, turn points, scenery, etc. Each trail is rated from 1-5 for difficulty and 1-10 for scenic beauty, and it describes the length of the trail and how long it would take to hike it. I've hiked many of the rated "10's" and I can say that they were all spectacular. The book's greatest benefit is that because it's so broad (400 hikes), you're bound to find real gems in there that aren't so touristy (like Monadnock). I don't like crowds when I'm hiking. Many other hiking guides only list popular hikes, not necessarily the best hikes. Don't hesitate to buy this book! Paperback - 402

Book Review: A reader from Finger Lakes of New York - This book is a comprehensive directory of New England campgrounds, both public and private. It provides both facility and recreation information, but emphasizes (with a rating of 1-10) the scenic beauty that can be observed directly from each campround. I found the "tips" on each camground to be extremely informative and I plan to vacation at the sites that received a high rating from these authors. Cee Dub's Dutch Oven and Other Camp Cookin'
Book Description: This cookbook is a "continuation" of CEE DUB'S DUTCH OVEN with over 150 new recipes, new photos, and all new stories. Many of the recipes are contributed by friends who also enjoy Dutch oven cooking and the outdoors, to provide a variety of tastes and favorites. There are shortened sections pertaining to the history, selection, and care of DO's which provide a wealth of information for the beginner and the more experienced camp cook. Book Review: A reader from Grangeville, Idaho - After reading Cee Dub's first book and then his new Second book, we can only conclude that it is a must for the camp cook. The recipes are delicious, healthy and easy to produce. Cee Dub also indicates how to spice each recipe up with our own preferred tastes. His tall tales make you want to read the book in one sitting. However the recipes make you want to start cooking. Having lived near the area Cee Dub refers to in his travels, I can imagine seeing him out there on the river and in the backcountry where I work and play. Cee Dub gives little tid- bits of hints to make every camp cook more seasoned and makes every upcoming trip a feat to look forward to. His stories of "pards" gone by touch the soul of anyone who enjoys good times, friends and family. I would like to know the "real story" behind some of the antics going on in Ceedub' s camps. I doubt people would ever want to leave with such a gracious host, great cook, and even better story teller. Keep up the great work, Cee Dub, we will never put you down! Spiral-bound - 210

Book Review: janewoodruff@yahoo.com
from Indiana - I'm prejudiced -- my father wrote this book. He designed
a cast aluminum dutch oven for a piece of cookware that the Boy Scouts
could pack in their backpacks. Everyone wanted to know, "what can you cook
in it"? His answer was always, "anything you can cook in the oven in your
kitchen you can cook in the dutch oven". These recipes are fast and easy
and can be used whether you are eating in our camping out. I hope you will
buy and try these recipes as a testament to a man who dedicated 60 of his
75 years to Boy Scouting! He passed away in 1990 but left behind a bunch
of full stomachs. Thanks!Paperback - 192 pages 3 edition (June 1, 2000)

The
Old-Fashioned Dutch Oven Cookbook : Complete With Authentic Sourdough Baking,
Smoking Fish and Game, Making Jerky, Pemmican, and Other Lost Campfi
Book Description: First of its kind in print, this outdoor specializes in old-fashioned Dutch oven cookery and sourdough recipes. The book explains how to build the right kind of fire, for the best results with a minimum of time and effort. Tempting recipes for hungry fishermen and hunters include pot roasts, mulligan stews, and dishes mad from fish of various kinds, bear meat, buffalo, venison, upland game birds, rabbit, woodchuck, and many more. One chapter features the favorite recipes of some other Pacific Northwest writers. Book Review: Dennis L. Clay from Moses Lake, WA - Today, cooking with a Dutch oven is all the rage and this book started it all. Every Dutch oven cook should own this book, no matter how many other Dutch oven cookbooks they own. Don Holm had the guts to write the first book in modern times (that being in the 1960s) about cooking with a Dutch oven. In fact, when Holm contacted Lodge about purchasing some ovens to perfect his recipes, he was informed that Dutch ovens were no longer in production. The rebound of this once essential and now popular way to cook in the great outdoors can be attributed to one person and one book, the Old Fashioned Dutch Oven Cookbook, by Don Holm. Sure, other authors have now jumped on the band wagon and written their take on the cast iron cooking pot, just as there are now more books than ever about vegetable gardening and fly fishing. But Holm was the first, and this book was the inspiration for many of the others. The author goes beyond what most readers would expect from a cookbook. He takes that extra step and provides a bundle of outdoor stories that outdoor lovers, and others, will enjoy. And, besides a history of the Dutch oven and the stories, Holm provides many useful recipes for beginners and experienced cooks as well. This book is a good study for all serious Dutch oven cooks and beginners as well. Once again, every Dutch oven cook should own this book, no matter how many other Dutch oven cookbooks they own. Cross
Creek Cookery
Book Description: The Classic Book on Southern Cooking. First published in 1942, Cross Creek Cookery was compiled by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at the request of readers who wanted to recreate the luscious meals described in Cross Creek -- her famous memoir of life in a Florida hamlet. Lovers of old-fashioned, down-home cooking will treasure the recipes for Grits, Hush-Puppies, Florida Fried Fish, Orange Fluff, and Utterly Deadly Southern Pecan Pie. For more adventuresome palates, there are such unusual dishes as Minorcan Gopher Stew, Coot Surprise, Alligator-Tail Steak, Mayhaw Jelly, and Chef Huston's Cream of Peanut Soup. Spiced with delightful anecdotes and lore, Cross Creek Cookery guides the reader through the rich culinary heritage of the deep tidal South with a loving regard for the rituals of cooking and eating. Anyone who longs for food -- and writing -- that warms the heart will find ample portions of both in this classic cookbook. Book Review: A reader - It is evident from her cookbook that Marjorie tasted of nearly everything and learned to make delicious dishes out of some very odd things: Poke Weed (on toast), Pot Roast of Bear, Smother-Fried Squirrel, Gopher Stew, Coot Surprise, Jugged Rabbit, a host of Pilaus, and an infamous blackbird pie. Of course this book is not simply a culinary freak-show. There are dozens of recipes for desserts, seafood, meats-found-at-the-A&P, jams, and soups, featuring ingredients of which we are all familiar and unafraid. She was proud to share them and claimed each recipe was nothing short of first-rate. Included among these is her piece de resistance, Crab A La Newburg, and the best Strawberry Shortcake ever. Accompanied by anecdotes of Florida rural living in the 1930s and 1940s, this book is a delight and an excursion from a mundane kitchen Paperback (March

Cooking
for Campers & Backpackers (Nuts 'N' Bolts Guide)
Book Description: Cooking in the backcountry has come a long way in recent years. A wide variety of light, easy to prepare foods that weren't on the market 10 years ago are now available for campers and backpackers. This book offers information on how to eat well when camping or backpacking. Backcountry cooking is almost always done on a single burner stove with a limited fuel supply, so this book abounds with one-pot meals that take no more than 20 minutes to cook. The general advice and more than two dozen recipes will broaden your selections and give some options that you might not have thought about. The trail-tested recipes are simple to make, yet tasty enough to use on trip after trip. Book Review: A reader from United States - The only reason that I gave this book only 3 stars is because it didn't meet my specific needs as well as I hoped. However I am not a "roughing it" kind of gal. We camp in a motorhome. For the person who is an avid hiker or backpacker-type camper, this book is marvelous. There aren't a lot of pages, so it is easy and lightweight to pack along and it offers many helpful suggestions on both food and drink. It could be a definite boon to the backpacker, so I would recommend it for this use. There are about 25 recipes (two or more per page) and several pages of suggested "easy to prepare" foods that can be purchased in the supermarket and are economical to carry. There is a section on drinking water safety and information about cookstoves, how to prepare coffee, etc. This is a book very well suited for a primitive camper, not necessarily an rv-er. An rv-er may find the few recipes helpful, though, if they enjoy cooking over the campfire. Paperback - 32 pages

Welder's
Handbook : A Complete Guide to Mig, Tig, Arc & Oxyacetylene Welding
Editorial Reviews: Ingram - Finch has updated and revised his classic handbook with the latest information available on welding, brazing, and cutting; equipment and safety; fitting and jigging; gas welding, cutting, brazing, and soldering; arc, MIG and TIG welding; plasma cutting; and more. Book Review: kingsparks from Thaxton, VA - I found WELDER'S to be interesting, informative and, (maybe just as important,) readable. The author covers all the essentials and does it in a manner that keeps you interested. Safety is of prime importance and this is emphasized throughout the book. I received my copy two weeks ago and have been through it twice, it will become a regular reference for my use. Mr. Finch repeatedly mentions the importance of mastering Gas Welding, or at least becoming comfortable with gas welding, before going on to other types welding. This is important and can not be stressed too much. With gas welding he points out, heat, heat, heat and control of heat is all important. Another important factor for any weldor, as pointed out throughout the book is Practice. You can not go wrong with this book. Paperback - 170

It highlights the advantages of building in aluminum, and explains the limitations of the material. The machinery, tools, techniques, and skills required for building in aluminum are detailed, along with procedures for setting-up, painting, and dealing with corrosions and repairs. Information is provided concerning passenger ferries, racing powerboats, and design structures. Sims is experienced as a boat builder, a design draftsman, and a consultant.Book News, Inc.®, Portland, OR Book Review: Midwest Book Review from Oregon, WI - Now in an updated and expanded third edition, Ernest Sims' Aluminum Boatbuilding is a completely "user friendly" and practical guide for designing and building aluminum alloy boats. Every aspect and issue are comprehensively covered including the advantages of building in aluminum (weight savings, inherent material strength, minimal maintenance), as well as the limitations that should be recognized in comparison with other boatbuilding materials. Sims covers the machinery, tools, techniques and skills required, along with setting-up procedures, painting, dealing with corrosion, and making repairs to hulls. Aluminum Boatbuilding also addresses the practical application of adhesives for bonding aluminum, welding techniques including friction stir welding, as well as plasma and waterjet cutting. A careful reading of Aluminum Boatbuilding is a "must" for anyone contemplating designing and building their own aluminum craft from passenger ferries to racing powerboats. Hardcover - 144

The
Nature of Boats: Insights and Esoterica for the Nautically Obsessed
Book Description: The Nature of Boats is packed with understandable explanations of the difference between initial and reserve stability, of why winged keels do what they do, of how torque and horsepower work, of traditional vs. high-tech boatbuilding materials, of rudder control, of speed powered by sails vs. engines, of floatation and trim, and more. Book Review: Alan Dale Daniel from Bakersfield, CA - This is a book filled with detailed information about boats and boat design. What is covered is well explained; however, the overall approach is scattered. The initinal chapters just seem to wander about from one boat design story to another, and then the author even diverts to "mystery" story telling in the style of Mike Hammer. The author uses a lot of math, but it is not presented in a high flown manner which is often done by those who are good at math. The math explanations are not only straight forward, but they are always set up in a way that applies the math to the real world of boats and boat design. The math helps the reader see why certain boats behave in certain ways. Overall this book will enhance the knowledge of anyone who owns a boat but does not have a degree in boat design. Very useful. Boatbuilding
With Aluminum
Book Description: Only a lack of information has kept aluminum from becoming a more popular material for backyard boat builders and small-scale professionals; and here, for the first time, is everything builders need to know to successfully build aluminum boats of almost any size or type. Covered are basic fabrication methods as well as more advanced aluminum-forming techniques and large-yacht construction Book Review: A reader from Redwood Valley, CA - When I first received the book, it looked like a text book. Within the first two chapters though, I was hooked. Mr. Pollard coveys a vast amount of information in a very easy reading style. I wish all "how to" books were as easy to read and understand. The
Elements of Boat Strength: For Builders, Designers, and Owners
Book Description: Dave Gerr is a master of explaining boat technology to a popular audience. In this, his latest book, he handily tackles the elements of boat strength, explaining it all in clear, readable prose and without intimidating math. The book is comprehensive, covering: masts, deck beams, engine beds, hull stringers, compression posts; rigging strengths and wire sizes; strengths of various hull constructions and everything else amateur and professional boatbuilders, boat designers, and boat owners will need to know. Covers fiberglass, wood, steel, and aluminum. Book Review: John O'Neill from Fairfield, CA - This is a book about the structure of boat hulls that is easy to read and easy to understand. It's primary purpose is to detail the scantling requirements of nearly any small boat hull (10-120 ft) of virtually any material. Gerr has the gift of being able to convey his considerable knowledge to others, and he suceeds admirably with this book. It is well laid out, detailed without being budensome, has a wealth of useful information, and is easy to use. The index is complete. He even includes a short history of, and the advantages/disadvantages, of nearly all boatbuilding materials. If you want to build a reed raft, look elsewhere. Anything more modern than that (with the exception of ferro-cement) this book covers it. Hardcover - 352

Boatbuilding
Manual
Book Description: Boatbuilding Manual is the classic manual in its field, having been used for years as a professional reference as well as a standard text at both boatbuilding and design schools. Like its predecessors, this edition emphasizes traditional wooden construction but also surveys plywood, wood-epoxy, fiberglass, steel, aluminum, and other boatbuilding methods, and is thoroughly updated with respect to modern tools and materials. Throughout the book, Steward recommends products, materials, and services that he has either used or regards highly, saving the amateur (and professional!) from ferreting out these sources. Book Review: jpwfrom New Orleans, LA - This book is (or should be) truly mandatory for anyone constructing a boat or rebuilding a boat (sail or power) made of wood. It is an invaluable reference, and has a wealth of information and tips for the most experienced boatbuilder. Most importantly however, is that it paints a remarkably accuate portrait of what is involved in working with the media of wood and water. It will either encourage the motivated amateur, or discourage him or her with its no-nonsense explanation of the nature of such an undertaking. In short, it makes life easier for *anyone* who works with wooden boats, sail or power. Hardcover - 372

Metal
Corrosion in Boats : The Prevention of Metal Corrosion in Hulls, Engines,
Rigging and Fittings
Book Description: Understanding metal corrosion and its prevention is vital for the safety and integrity of a boat. Failure through corrosion or fatigue can result in masts falling down, keels falling off or boats quietly sinking in their moorings. Less dramatic are such problems as pitting or fracture of propeller shafts, erosion of pipe work, rusting of steel hulls and galvanic corrosion of aluminum ones. About the Author: Nigel Warren is a professional naval architect who has designed a variety of craft ranging from frigates and fast ferries to workboats and launches. He has been a keen sailor and boat owner all his life, and is a regular contributor to the yachting press. Hardcover - 224

Boatbuilding
With Baltek Durakore
Book Description: Using the materials and methods in this ground-breaking book, amateurs and small=scale professionals can build a high-tech colored-laminate boat in less time than it once took just to loft the design for conventional construction. Computers have all but eliminated the onerous lofting stage. And a new manmade ``wood'' and special marine epoxy glues permit building virtually any hull shape in just days instead of weeks and years. Using Baltek's DuraKore, a precision manufactured balsa-and-hardwook sandwich each half-hull for Dick Newick's famous 40-foot racing trimaran Ocean Surfer was completed by four people in just six hours. Written in close collaboration with and endorsed by the Baltek Corporation, this is the first book to detail the use of the revolutionary boatbuilding material that has taken the small-scale professional boatbuilding world by storm. Book Review: Jeffrey Zoeller from East Lansing - This book fully explains the Baltek method of boat building. The method is a real time saver over standard cold-molded planking methods and it results in a stronger hull. The method allows for construction of all hull shapes using ordinary tools. Check this out if you are considering new methods for boatbuilding.` Hardcover - 304

Building
Classic Small Craft: Complete Plans and Instructions for 47 Boats
Book Description: Gardner was not only good with words and tools, he was a great teacher as well. He sought out the best examples of classic wooden small craft in sheds and backyards across the country, then he measured them, drew them, researched their histories, and wrote out instructions so clear and complete that any amateur builder with modest talent and ambition could build beautiful boats. And thousands have. This commemorative edition contains the texts of Building Classic Small Craft and More Building Classic Small Craft, Volume 1, plus a section of eulogies from Gardner's legions of fans. Here you'll find all the plans, measurements, and directions a reader needs to build any of 47 beautiful small boats for oar, sail, or motor, including dories, peapods, Whitehalls, Rangeley boats, wherries, Sea Bright skiffs, and more. Book Review: Rick Demkovich from Chesterton, Indiana - Yes, you can read John Garner for history/background, and he shares enough, most of the time, to make you look further. Yes, you can read John Gardner for technique, because there is so much (spiling, planking, plane-making). But best of all, you can read John Gardner to find a boat you want to, and can, and really should build. In fact, start this week! Clean out the garage or shed, match up a couple of sheets of plywood and make some battens, and go to it! For decades Mr. Gardner encouraged boatbuilders, and this book of his, like the others, carries on that encouragement. The writing style is educational without being pedantic, the technical terms are not a barrier, the drawings are superb. I rate this five stars. Hardcover - 536

Propeller
Handbook : The Complete Reference for Choosing, Installing, and Understanding
Boat Propellers
Book Description: In this complete reference, Gerr has created charts and graphs that enable the user to enter his boat's speed and powering characteristics and find the optimum propeller pitch and diameter quickly and conveniently. Covers propeller installations, special considerations for sailboats, high-speed outboards, stern drives, and motorsailers. Book Review: A reader from Camp Douglas, Wisconsin - This is an extremely readable book for a technical subject tome. It is one of the better organized technical treatises I have seen. Whether you just want to select a propeller for your boat or want to design boats and propellers the book has something for you; though the casually curious may find themselves skipping a lot of engineering content. Tells you how to proceed in propeller selection in a parsimonious, no nonsense manner. And not simply how to do it, but the theory and reasons behind what to do are included as well. A complete index and list of suppliers makes this book a good reference tool. Hardcover - 176

New
York September 11
Book Description: By now, the story of September 11 has been burned into our collective memory, but few have seen New York from the perspective of Magnum photographers. Eleven members of the legendary photo agency immediately dispersed from their monthly meeting in New York as the events unfolded, risking their own lives to document the incomprehensible. Their photographs, by turns haunting, surreal, and breathtaking, are collected together in New York September 11, by Magnum Photographers, compellingly presented in a high-quality edition from powerHouse Books. From their various vantage points we are transported to Ground Zero to witness the destruction of the World Trade Center, the buildings’ implosion which sent thousands fleeing from debris through the streets, and the exodus out, only to return to the scene in quiet observation and admiration of the rescue workers whose jobs have only begun and of the mourners who have been gathering in bewildering grief. As a tribute to the World Trade Center’s noted place in history, New York September 11, by Magnum Photographers will also include some of the most beloved photographs of the Twin Towers taken by Magnum over the last quarter of a century. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to an accredited charitable organization, The New York Times 9/11 Neediest Fund. Book Review: A reader from New York NY - As a New Yorker who has lived through the horrors of September 11 I thought I would never want to see another picture of the event. But when a friend brought me the book by the Magnum photographers I was fascinated and deeply touched by the images. The book brought back memories, bad and good from those dark days. The photographs are stunning, some are even beautiful, especially the shots of the Trade Towers when they were still standing. I appreciate the special sensibility behind the photographs - these are not sensationalistic snapshots but honest and strong pictures. This book is a valuable document of an historic event of the greatest magnitude, a book one has to own and cherish. I will recommend it to all my friends. Hardcover - 144

Day
of Terror, September 11, 2001
Book Description: An unthinkable event happened to the United States of America and its citizens on September 11, 2001. Terrorists hijacked four passenger jet airliners, each carrying tanks full of fuel and large numbers of passengers, enroute to destinations in western United States. The hijackers commandeered the planes and deliberately flew three of the planes to points where destruction was achieved: the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, next to Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital. The fourth plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, just north of Camp David, the Presidential Retreat in Maryland. Efforts by the hijackers to cause additional destruction was thwarted by the heroic passengers of the airliner. Thousands of people were killed; destruction of property soars in the billions of dollars; but the resolve of the American people has swelled to a massive crescendo of support for the country. America will achieve!! America will persevere! America will stand steadfast and overcome the grievous loss it has sustained. To the families who have lost their loved ones; to the rescue workers who are undaunted and continue their efforts; to the volunteers who give endless hours of their time—America Salutes You! Book Review: Antonio from Tampa, FL - Wonderfully put together volume of by far the worst day in American history. I book I will keep forever to look back on and remember those lost that fateful September morn. Will also make a nice piece to explain to my children someday about what happened. Paperback - 48 pages

The
World Trade Center: A Tribute
Book Description: This stunning tribute to the World Trade Center focuses on the history and architecture of the buildings and the lower Manhattan neighborhood where they stood with over 80 full-color photographs. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the NYC Fireman's Education Fund. Book Review: RRiis from New York - This is easily the best of the WTC tributes out so far since it covers (in words and pictures) not just recent events but the whole history of the WTC (and the adjacent plaza and buildings) from its planning before the 1964 World's Fair through its 7-year construction to the tragedy of 9/11. The pictures don't just capture the obvious Hudson River-view of the Twin Towers but the courtyards, the corridors, the shops, and the observation deck and visitor's center. There is coverage of the 1993 bombing, the 1974 "Human Fly" episode, the late-'70's tightrope walk between the Towers, and, of course, 1976's "King Kong" filming -- everything that made the WTC an essential part of the Big Apple. A nice tribute to a never-to-be-forgotten landmark. Hardcover - 96 pages

Twilight
Sky: Air Disaster at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon
Book Description: September 11, 2001 was a catastrophic day in American history. Four Boeing jets were hijacked and brought down, precipating the collapse of the World Trade Center and part of the Pentagon, and leaving America in an unprecedented state of shock. Twilight Sky focuses on the cause of these tragic events: the takeover of two Boeing 767 and two Boeing 757 jets from American Airlines and United Airlines. Each chapter of Twilight Sky is devoted to each aircraft that was destroyed, describing the known events on board, how the hijackers might have taken control, the technical challenge they faced, and the flight profiles based on all available data. The text is lavishly supplemented by aeronautical charts and diagrams, as well as photos of the exact planes involved thanks to the contributions of some of aviation's most talented photographers. The book closes with an overview of the state of the airline and aerospace industry in the wake of the disaster, summarizing national defense security measures and the resulting economic impact. Finally, procedural security lapses are discussed, some not yet touched by the news media, which if addressed and resolved will strengthen and solidify the safety of American skies. Every idea, from steel cockpit doors to "knockout gas", is reviewed and analyzed in detail to consider its weaknesses and viability. With prudent measures in place, tempered by the very liberty that American freedom preserves, the twilight sky will give way to a new dawn.Contains 63 pages, 25 photographs, and 21 maps and diagrams; color cover with b&w content. Book Review: R. L. Fleming from Scranton, PA - This is an impressive collection of facts and data regarding the four plane crashes of 9/11 into the WTC, Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania. The author avoids emotional pandering and instead takes the reader on a technical overview of the airplanes that the terrorists had at their disposal, pointing out some of the things that (unfortunately) made their work easier. There's many photographs of the exact planes involved while they were in airline service as well as cockpit photos. Disaster images are presented in the form of excellent maps, navigation charts, and line drawings rather than sensational photos. The content is noticeably objective with opinions surfacing only in the final chapter where the author weighs in with a constructive look at the current risks to the flying public and how agencies can do better. This book is barely 70 pages but packs quite a punch of info and exposes some facts poorly researched by the press. Having read it on October 18 I'm amazed by how quickly it was written, too. For anyone who learned a lot from the Air Disaster series by Macarthur Job, this title belongs alongside them. Paperback - 63 pages

Sometime
Lofty Towers: A Photographic Memorial of the World Trade Center
Book Description: "Sometime Lofty Towers" is a hushed photographic elegy to the World Trade Center. Because every image of the Twin Towers must henceforth be instinct with the multitudinous memory of lives cut short there, this book restricts itself to architectural images of the Towers' proud presence and melancholy absence-and eschews as "de trop" the all-too-familiar images of the violence and anguish of that awful morning. The majority of the photographs in this book come from the luminous portfolio of Jake Rajs, master photographer of the New York City skyline and Hudson River. They track the progress of a composite day of yesteryear, as Rajs's camera wheels with the sun from ruddy morning to starry night about New York's quarter-mile-high icons. Of the forty-six full-color images of Lower Manhattan in "Sometime Lofty Towers", only one in every five depicts the aftermath of the World Trade Center's destruction. The post-destruction images silently point at the Towers "in absentia"; each such image being juxtaposed with an image of the Towers in their pride taken from a similar viewpoint and in similar light. The book opens with a dedication to "the heroic rescuers who died striving in the name of mercy"; followed by the full text of the impassioned remarks of Governor Pataki to the joint session of the New York State Legislature on September 13th. A sensitive yet informative introductory essay by scientist Robert Hutchinson compares and contrasts the moral and physical dimensions of the events of September 11th; recounts the history of the construction of the World Trade Center and describes its ultimate physical dimensions; describes the flight paths and physical dimensions of the airliners that struck the Towers; and explains the physics of the catastrophic collapses. The title of the book is a phrase immortalized in Shakespeare's Sonnet 64: "When sometime lofty towers I see down razed, / And brass eternal slave to mortal rage /...This thought is as a death, which cannot choose / But weep to have that which it fears to lose." In like fashion, "Sometime Lofty Towers" seeks to ease the pain of ruin with the balm of remembered beauty. The Widows' and Children's Fund of the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York will receive one dollar from every copy of this book sold. Book Review: A reader from Washington D.C. - First of all, I liked this book a lot. Incredible photos and like another reviewer pointed out, no real overly sappy commentary. But someone who wrote a review before mentioned that they'd rather not have the 9/11 photos in the book. Understandable, but I think the style in which this book was put together is powerful. To show photos of the once magnificent and strong towers on one page and then the devistation on another only re-emphasizes and reaffirms that we will never forget what happened that day. September
11, 2001
Book Description: On Tuesday September 11, our world changed forever. The United States was attacked by an unknown terrorist organization. Word of this attack spread instantaneously around the world. Billions of people woke up on September 12 to find that the front page of their local newspaper was devoted to the tragedy of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Andrews McMeel Publishing in conjunction with The Poynter Institute, a school for journalists, is proud to announce the immediate publication of September 11, 2001. This book will be a collection of 150 front pages of major newspapers throughout the world. The net profits earned by Andrews McMeel Publishing and the royalties to The Poynter Institute will be given to the September 11th Fund, administered by the United Way. Book Review: RRiis (see more about me) from NY - (...) This is not a collection of photos of the 9/11 tragedies, per se, but a collection of 9/12 newspaper front pages from nearly all the major US dailies, the biggest national papers (USA Today, WSJ, Christian Science Monitor), plus several major newspapers from around the world. Horrible as the events of that day were, it is interesting (and revelatory in some cases) to see how the events were covered. Obviously the NYC and Washington newspapers had a special closeness to the events but there is plenty to learn from reviewing the coverage in distant cities and small towns across North America, by US allies and traditionally non-allied nations (and even a few enemy states), and of editorial decisions about headline phrasing and photo selection. In a way, a book like this makes a case, for better or worse, for the world as global village. Not for the feint-hearted, perhaps, but an interesting collection and certainly worth preserving. Nation: America Remembers September 11, 2001
Book Description: Introduction written by New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. During our nation's most trying times, it has been LIFE that has provided the images that help us understand, remember, and in the process, renew. Now the editors of LIFE have assembled a moving, brilliantly illustrated account of tragedy and triumph. This is about firemen going in amidst the rubble, but it is also about a Frenchman in Paris holding up a sign that says, "We are all Americans." This is about our leaders taking charge, but it is also about schoolchildren in Iowa hanging an American flag on a tree in their backyard. Beginning with the history of lower Manhattan, the book explains what happened on September 11, profiles many of the heroes, victims and rescuers (fireman, police, doctors, and rescue dogs among them), and paints an inspiring portrait if a nation and world coming together in sadness, pride and resolve. The book is more than photographs. Explanatory text runs throughout, and the book also includes a selection of original essays about America and September 11, written by such notables as Maya Angelou, Thomas Keneally (Schindler's List), David McCullough, Melissa Fay Greene (The Temple Bombing), Andrei Codrescu, Gordon Parks, Doug Stanton (In Harm's Way), Bob Greene (Duty), James Bradley (Flags of Our Fathers), and others. Ten percent of the cover price of this book will be donated to the September 11th Fund of the New York Community Trust and the United Way of New York City. The purpose of the fund is to help address the immediate and longer-term needs of victims, their families, and communities affected by the events of September 11, 2001. Book Review: Ann - 5 stars = I love it? No, 5 stars is my thanks for the delicate and tasteful, yet powerful and moving manner in which this most tragic moment in our nations history was recorded. LIFE exceeded its own reputation with the content and speedy publication of this chronicle - so we may never forget. Hardcover - 192

Strength, enterprise and ambition will be its legacy. Book Review: Laura C. Kreis from Mt. Airy, MD - This book is tremendous...lots of great shots of the buildings from many different angles. Not just a tribute to the WTC, but to New York City itself. Amazing color and clarity - great views of surrounding structures, the water, etc. as well. Really makes the buildings come alive.
